SEEKING DONATIONS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM IN ATIMA

OCHO is a collaborative effort, and there are many ways to help — even if you aren’t planning to make the trip to Atima this year.  In the second week of April, OCHO will be sending a container load of medicines, hospital supplies, and therapeutic and assistive devices to support our work, and that of our partners, in Honduras.

This year, we’re also planning to send educational materials and art supplies to support “Happy Faces for English,” a free program that teaches English to primary- and middle-schoolers in Atima.  The program is run by a longtime OCHO volunteer, Frank Murcia Rivera, whose involvement dates back to 2007, when he and other members of an Episcopal youth group volunteered to help with the medical brigade.  He enjoyed the work so much, it spurred him to study English in his spare time, and he now serves as an interpreter for the OCHO medical team.  Frank says he runs these English classes to share what he’s learned, and pass it along to the next generation.

If you’d like to help, consider making a donation, in cash or in kind, to provide the following items for the English language program:

  • White board(s), markers, and erasers.

  • Laser printer/copier/scanner, for copying course materials

  • Extra print cartridge for laser printer

  • 8.5 x 11” copy paper

  • Children’s books in English, at the primary school level

  • Spanish-English pocket dictionaries (20 still needed)

  • Crayons and colored pencils

  • Pencil sharpeners and erasers

  • Pens (black or blue ink)

  • Coloring books

  • Glue sticks, children’s scissors

  • Acrylic paints (non-toxic)

  • Watercolors (non-toxic)

  • Paint brushes

  • Construction paper

If you have materials to donate, please contact Peter Kirchgraber at logan.kirchgraber@gmail.com before April 8.  We’d be grateful for your help!
